Universal Stair FAQs
What is the ALTO Universal Stair?
The ALTO Universal Stair is a heavy-duty aluminium scaffold staircase designed to provide safe, practical access between scaffold levels. It is suitable for construction, industrial and maintenance environments and provides an alternative to ladders and traditional heavy galvanised steel temporary stair systems.
What type of scaffolding can the ALTO Universal Stair be used with?
The ALTO Universal Stair is designed for 48mm tube-and-fitting scaffolding. It can be installed using standard scaffold tube fixings and a scaffolder's spanner, making it suitable for a wide range of temporary scaffold configurations.
What lift heights are available for the Universal Stair?
The ALTO Universal Stair is available in six standard sizes covering lift heights from approximately 430mm to 3400mm. The range includes 2, 4, 6, 9, 12 and 15 tread stair units.
Can the Universal Stair accommodate different scaffold lift heights?
Yes. The Universal Stair is designed to accommodate varying lift heights within the permitted range of each stair unit. Its adjustable design allows level treads to be maintained across the permitted range of stair angles.
How is the ALTO Universal Stair installed?
Universal Stair units are supplied pre-assembled and unfold for installation. They are designed to fit 48mm tube-and-fitting scaffolding and can be installed using a scaffolder's spanner to operate the locking mechanisms.
Can handrails be supplied with the Universal Stair?
Yes. ALTO Universal Stair handrails are available for all models. The stair units can also accept standard tube-and-fitting components to allow handrails to be configured to suit the site. ALTO handrails fold flat for transport and are secured into the stair using pins.
Can the Universal Stair be used for applications other than standard scaffold access?
Yes. The Universal Stair can be supplied with different interface connectors for specialist applications. These include slab hangers for mounting stairs directly to structures and specialist connectors for creating extended stair flights for embankments and other challenging access requirements.
What is the difference between the ALTO Universal Stair and Fixed Scaffold Stairs?
The ALTO Universal Stair is designed for flexibility and varying lift heights on tube-and-fitting scaffolding. ALTO Fixed Scaffold Stairs are designed for specific system scaffolding configurations, including Cuplock and Allround systems, with fixed lift options.
If you are unsure which stair system is suitable for your project, contact ALTO Access Products for advice on the appropriate configuration.
