Specialist Aluminium Access at The Painted Hall, Greenwich

Alto aluminium access tower with elevated platform and cantilever arrangement inside the historic Painted Hall, Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich.

Project: Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich

Sector: Heritage & Historic Buildings

Application: Specialist High-Level Access

Solution: Bespoke Aluminium Access Configuration

Project Overview

The Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich is one of Britain's most remarkable historic interiors, renowned for its monumental architecture and elaborate Baroque decoration.

Photographs rediscovered in the Alto archives document a specialist aluminium access installation within this historic setting, demonstrating how modular access equipment can be configured to accommodate complex architectural environments.

The installation incorporated an extensive elevated platform arrangement, supporting additional mobile and cantilever access at height.

The Challenge

Providing high-level access within a building of this scale and architectural complexity presents challenges beyond those encountered in conventional working environments.

The considerable internal height, imposing columns, architectural features and ornate decorative surfaces create a demanding environment for positioning and configuring access equipment.

The installation required an arrangement capable of providing access to elevated working areas within an unusual internal layout – whilst achieving a low imposed point load on the floor below and minimising disruption of access to the building.

The Alto Solution

Alto supplied a specially configured aluminium access system incorporating four supporting towers with a large elevated deck spanning between them.  A further mobile access tower was positioned above the deck, incorporating a cantilever arrangement to extend access towards difficult-to-reach areas.

This multi-level configuration illustrates how modular aluminium access equipment can be adapted to meet complex access requirements where standard standalone tower arrangements may not provide the necessary reach or working positions.

The installation demonstrates the versatility of aluminium access systems in accommodating unusual architectural layouts and demanding high-level access applications with the potential for delivering lower point loads than steel or MEWP based solutions.

The Outcome

The archive photographs document an impressive specialist access installation within one of Britain's most architecturally significant historic interiors.
The project provides a great example of Alto's experience in supplying access solutions beyond conventional tower configurations.
It highlights the importance of adaptable access equipment and carefully considered configurations when working within complex and architecturally sensitive environments.
